It’s Menstrual Hygiene Day!

It’s Menstrual Hygiene Day!

So I thought I’d give you some Period Facts!

The beginning of your cycle or day 1 is the 1st day of your period.

Cycles are counted from day 1 to the next day 1.

This is usually 28 days but can go up to 35 days.

Beyond 35 days this is abnormal and needs to be investigated! Causes can be PCOS or many other issues which can be managed with naturopathic medicine.

Times of high stress can also cause your cycle to be longer than usual once in a while.

Typical periods last 5-7 days.

You may see tiny clots but large clots are not normal.

You lose about 30-80ml of blood during your period which is about 3-4 pads per day.

Heavier periods can be due to fibroids, etc and can be improved with naturopathic medicine.

In this part of the world, we have many options for our period - pads, tampons but also more environmentally friend and cost friendly options like diva cups, cloth pads, sponges, cotton tampons, “period underwear” and even yoga pants!

Period poverty is a real issue facing women today and it’s getting worse during lockdown. Women cannot afford pads and tampons which are frankly expensive. A handful of US states have passed laws mandating schools provide period products to students, deeming them as essential as toilet paper, but more work needs to be done.

Inadequate menstrual hygiene is not unique to the US but is a worldwide issue especially in developing countries and women living in poverty are especially vulnerable.

If you noticed that your periods don’t fit any of these criteria then you should seek naturopathic care with us at the RSNC!
